The Washington DC Metro area has a large community of immigrants and refugees from all over the world. Among the students we serve, many have come because their land is torn by war, many have come because of state sponsored genocide, and others from fear of violence. Of the students we serve, 75% are Muslim. With the influx of Afghan refugees in the area, this team will be seeking to serve those individuals as well. Due to language and cultural barriers, immigrants and refugees are often restricted to their homes and families. English classes, though available, are expensive and infrequent. So, much of their community is still back in their home countries, and they have few opportunities to form new friendships.
This team’s goal is to meet the needs of these immigrants holistically through English-learning, community-building, and gospel-sharing. They offer inexpensive classes, childcare, a daily Bible lesson and hospitality events. Adult English classes also provide a platform through which you can share the hope we have in Jesus. In addition, these classes allow those who come to interact with diverse students of similar backgrounds as well as local teachers.
We do not just want to care for individuals, but for the whole family. That’s where you come in. This summer, we hope to form relationships with our students’ children and bring the whole family into our community. We will do this by running a summer programme that provides ESL classes for adults, childcare for preschool kids, and programme activities for youth. Edgers will be putting on the youth summer programme that focuses on art, science, lego building, and drama.
Edgers will be leading the way to forming these familial relationships. They will lead the children in activities during ESL class time, support the team, aid the activity leaders, engage in hospitality events throughout the week and learn to participate in cross-cultural ministry from experienced missionaries.
